Social Media has Leveled the Playing Field
Social media has completely leveled the playing field, providing the large majority of the world with both a platform and a voice to share their passion and perspective on any given topic. Pretty amazing!
Despite being such a significant marketing tool, many brands do not fully understand or harness its power. During a meeting a while back, when Facebook was still in its infancy, I suggested the platform to VP of Sales & Marketing and was firmly told that Facebook would never fly in the real estate business. “Because nobody cares what kind of salad I had for lunch today”. I managed to conceal my laughter that day, but I can freely chuckle about it now. WOW! Fast forward a bunch of years and I can still see the gross misunderstanding of Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram. Brands may tend to think they are “engaging” in social media because they post hearts on Valentines Day or only re-post others content.
3 Concise Ways to Improve Your Social Media Presence:
- Post brand-significant content that is engaging, helpful and entertaining
- Make sure to link back to your website
- Curate and repurpose proven excellent content interests and solutions to problems, being sure to put it in your own words and brand voice
Social Media need not be a mystical, underutilized tool – rather, it should be seen as a powerful outlet in which to connect with your audience in real, powerful and meaningful ways. Content is still king, even in the digital space.
I love this statement from Seth Godin’s book Tribes,
Blogs and Twitter and all manner of other tools will come and go, possibly by the time you read this. The tactics are irrelevant, and the technology will always be changing. The essential lesson is that every day it gets easier to tighten the relationship you have with the people who choose to follow you.
So what are you waiting for?! There is no better time to begin using social media as a tool to quicken communication and deepen customer connections through valuable information.
